The Journey Begins

Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.”

-Buddha

We are a society conditioned to want more.

We can’t scroll through Facebook without seeing an ad for some thing that promises to improve our lives, but in reality, it leaves us with less money in our pockets and the burning desire for more, because that thing didn’t deliver on its promise and we’re desperate to fill the holes in our lives.

We’re made to feel less so we want more. If we’re unhappy with who we are we’re driven to fix it and instead of finding contentment in the moment and in ourselves, we fill that unhappiness with stuff. It’s not always physical stuff, sometimes we start a new diet or we read a new self-help book, wanting to find happiness in ourselves, but failing to realize that everything we need is already within us. We don’t need to buy the fricken lilies or wash our face, we need to accept ourselves and embrace the present moment; the present moment is all we have and all we control.

I’m like most Americans, I want more all the time, whether it’s clothes, or home decor pieces, food, or even Facebook notifications, I keep wanting more. And I realize that it’s because I’m tying to find contentment in stuff when it can’t be found there, but beginning today, I’m going to find contentment in the present moment.

This blog is dedicated to my journey of mindfulness and minimalism and it’s a journey I’m passionate about. This is a journey with no end in sight but one that will continue.

I hope you’ll join me.
